  • According to Fisheries Cooperative Association of Ina, drifting ropes and ghost nets become entangled in active fishing nets, resulting in significant trouble when the fishermen attempt to retrieve the catch. As well as making it difficult for the fishermen, the rope and ghost nets can also cause significant damage to their fishing equipment. The twined ropes need be removed from the fishing nets each time to enable hoisting; this process of removal and hoisting is a day-long activity.
During a six month period in 2007 enough waste to fill an 8 ton container 3 times, was collected. It is mostly rope and ghost nets. The disposal cost was borne by Fisheries Cooperative Association (industrial waste disposal cost in Tsushima City: 10,000 yen/m3). Light waste such as rope, floats, and plastic tanks were shredded and burned on the beach.
